Student Chef's Battled It Out

Back

On Wednesday 17th June, two teams of catering students from Kirklees College battled it out in this year's Totally Hells Kitchen competition, sponsored by Total Foodservice and held at Landings 72

Students from years one and two were asked to form teams and design a four course menu (with three choices for each course) and submit to a panel of judges. The judges then picked the two favourite menu's and these two teams competed in the final stage.

The two teams (made up of three chefs & two front of house from years one and two) began preparing for the evening in the early hours of the morning and worked hard throughout the day on their dishes.

Guests including friends and family, established local chefs and business leaders from around kirklees were invited and seated on either the 'Red' or 'Blue' side of the restaurant. The students were also watched and judged from within the kitchen by their catering curriculum team leader Gary Schofield and local celebrity chef Barrington Douglas from Discovery Bay.

Both menu's were exquisite with dishes such as; Wild mushroom cappuccino with sautéed mushrooms, Wholegrain mustard pork with honey roasted roots and sage mashed potato with a red wine jus and (A VERY delicious) Salted caramel chocolate tart with lime creme fraiche. The presentation and taste of the dishes were excellent and a real credit to the hard work from students and the training they receive at the college.

Front of house students were confident, calm, friendly and helpful and the evening flowed wonderfully.

Simon Howarth managing director of Total Foodservice said "Being a sponsor for Totally Hells Kitchen is a pleasure every year, the students at Kirklees College are on their way to becoming top notch quality chefs and always manage to amaze me with their skills and culinary knowledge.

"At Total Foodservice we believe in educating students in health & nutrition as well as helping to develop the skills of tomorrow's Chefs. Working with Kirklees College is just one of our commitments to achieving this."

The winners of the evening were the Red Team. Congratulations to Kieran Richardson, Tristan Morrison, Sam Gledhill, Paige Mawson and Sophie Metcalf. The team were presented with trophies, pens and chef jackets. There really wasn't much in it with both teams producing first class menu's, tastes and experience.

We're looking forward to next year!
