FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT

Monday 27 February - Sunday 12 March 2017

Every day millions of people pour hot water onto a teabag, coffee granules or powdered chocolate, but how many ever stop to think where the ingredients for their favourite hot beverage came from? And what about the sugar they use to sweeten the drink?

Millions of farmers and workers in developing countries worldwide toil in difficult conditions to grow the tea, coffee, cocoa and sugar that we take for granted. Although the global businesses they support are worth billions of pounds, many of the farmers and workers—without whose toil there would be no product—are not paid fairly.

Fairtrade fortnight

Take tea, the nation’s favourite drink for example. In Malawi tea pickers earn less than £1.46 a day. It means that almost 40% of the population in the tea growing areas live in poverty. 1 in 10 malnourished children die before their fifth birthday and only half the children complete primary school education, instead joining their parents to work in the tea plantations.

It’s a similar situation in the coffee, cocoa and sugar cane growing regions.

Families who can’t afford to provide more than one meal a day for their children can’t afford medical care for them either. With no spare capital they can’t invest in better farming to reduce costs or improve product quality to achieve higher prices for their crops.

In short, they are caught in a poverty trap.

In order to tackle the injustice in conventional trade and to empower smaller scale producers, the Fairtrade Foundation was set up as a UK charity in 1992. It is a member of Fairtrade International and guarantees that the products bearing the Fairtrade Mark, which it promotes and licenses, have been produced in accordance with internationally agreed Fairtrade standards.

It’s really easy for your catering business to join the campaign to show why choosing Fairtrade really matters and Fairtrade Fortnight is the ideal opportunity to show your support for these hardworking producers.
